Troubleshooting

This page lists the messages Janus 2.0.0 shows when something goes wrong, what each one means, and what to do. Find the message in the tables, or start with Where to look.

Where to look

  • The window itself. When Janus cannot show your wallet it says “Your wallet could not be shown”, with the reason under the steps. Retry starts the steps again. Choose another wallet is there when the wallet file itself could not be read, and takes you back to the import choices.
  • hedgehog.log in the .janus folder of your home folder. It holds what Hedgehog prints. Janus keeps no log file of its own. How to reset your wallet shows where .janus is on each system.
  • Hedgehog’s own folder, which holds the legacy ledger it downloaded, in the file bootstrap.dat:
System Folder
Windows %APPDATA%\Unigrid\Hedgehog
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Hedgehog
Linux $XDG_DATA_HOME/hedgehog, usually ~/.local/share/hedgehog

Janus runs on Windows with an x64 processor, on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and later), and on Linux with an x86_64 processor. Other computers are not supported.

Getting your wallet ready fails

These come from Hedgehog, the program Janus downloads and starts to read the legacy ledger.

Message What it means and what to do
Hedgehog stopped as it started; see …/hedgehog.log Hedgehog was started and ended at once. Another Hedgehog may already be running, see Another Hedgehog is running. Otherwise read the log.
Hedgehog did not answer within 30 seconds Hedgehog started and never answered. Click Retry. If it happens again, see Another Hedgehog is running, and check that security software is not blocking it.
The legacy ledger could not be downloaded; see …/hedgehog.log Hedgehog got no ledger. Check your internet connection, and that nothing blocks github.com. Click Retry.
The ledger is not signed by the Unigrid Foundation Janus will not show a ledger without a good signature. Quit Janus, delete the file bootstrap.dat in Hedgehog’s folder, start Janus again and let it download a new one. If the message comes back, report it.
Hedgehog could not be downloaded: … The download failed, and the rest of the message says why. Check your internet connection and click Retry.
The downloaded Hedgehog is not the release this Janus is made for What arrived is not the file Janus expects, and Janus has thrown it away. Something between you and GitHub may be changing downloads, such as a proxy or a filter. Click Retry, and report it if it keeps happening.
The downloaded Hedgehog is not signed by the Unigrid Foundation The same, and the signature check is the one that failed. Do not try to get round it.
No Hedgehog build for this platform There is no Hedgehog for your computer. See the list of supported computers above.
Hedgehog could not be run from … The file is missing, or the system will not run it. On Windows, security software may have quarantined hedgehog.exe. Allow it, or delete the folder named in the message so that Janus downloads Hedgehog again, and click Retry.
Hedgehog stopped answering Hedgehog stopped while Janus was reading the history. Click Retry. If it keeps happening, look in the log.

Another Hedgehog is running

Janus asks for Hedgehog on port 52884 of your own computer. Each time it runs, Janus makes a key of its own for that, so it cannot use a Hedgehog it did not start in this run. That includes one you started yourself, and one left running after Janus closed unexpectedly. Janus then starts a Hedgehog of its own, which cannot take the port, so you get one of the first two messages in the table.

Quit the other Hedgehog and click Retry:

  • Windows: open Task Manager, select hedgehog and click End task.
  • macOS: open Activity Monitor, select hedgehog and click the stop button.
  • Linux: run pkill -f hedgehog in a terminal.

Your wallet file cannot be read

Janus tells you while you import a file, or in the failure panel when it opens a wallet. These messages name the file and a reason.

Message What it means and what to do
<file> is not a wallet.dat Janus can read: it is larger than 2 GB Janus reads files up to 2 GB. Make a wallet dump with the older wallet’s dumpwallet command and import that.
<file> is not a wallet.dat Janus can read: the file itself is encrypted The database file is encrypted as a whole. That is not the same as a wallet with a passphrase, which Janus reads. Make a wallet dump and import that.
<file> is not a wallet.dat Janus can read: it is cut short The file is incomplete or damaged, often because it was copied while the older wallet ran, or the copy was interrupted. Copy it again with the older wallet closed.
<file> is not a wallet.dat Janus can read: it is not a Berkeley DB btree, or it has no main database The file is not a wallet.dat of the older wallet, or it is damaged. Check that you chose the right file.
<file> is neither a wallet.dat nor a wallet dump Janus can read: it does not start like a Berkeley DB file, and as a dump it holds no private keys Janus tried the file as both kinds. A dump holds lines with private keys, and this one has none.
<file> is neither a wallet.dat nor a wallet dump Janus can read: … and as a dump line 12 holds no private key The dump has a line that Janus does not take for a private key. The message gives its number. The file may be damaged, or cut off in the middle of a line.
<file> is not a wallet Janus can read The file in .janus/wallets is damaged. Click Choose another wallet, and restore from the recovery phrase.

Any other reason after “Janus can read:” means the same: the file is damaged, or it is not what you meant to choose. Janus never shows a private key in these messages.

Recovery phrase and password

Message What it means and what to do
A recovery phrase has 12 words, not 11 Janus counts the words. Fill in all 12 boxes, one word each, or paste the whole phrase into the first box.
"unigrid" is not a word recovery phrases use The word is spelled wrong, or is not on the list. Check it against what you wrote.
These words do not make a recovery phrase; check their order All the words are good but together they do not add up. Check the order, and that you have not mixed up two words.
Use at least 8 characters The password is too short.
The two passwords differ The second box must match the first. You cannot paste into them, so type it again.

Saving the history

Message What it means and what to do
Saved to <file> Done.
Could not save to <file> Janus could not write there. Choose a folder you can write to.

Janus will not open

If a dialog says “Janus could not start its browser engine from …”, followed by a reason and “Install Janus again to restore it”, part of the installation is missing. Install the same version again over the old one. Installing on macOS and Installing on Windows show how.

The numbers are not what you expected

  • The ledger is frozen at the block shown in the chip in the top right corner. Nothing later is in it.
  • “This wallet has no transactions.” means the ledger holds none for these addresses. A wallet made with a new recovery phrase has none, and shows only what the network has promised it, as “Includes … UGD awaiting mint”.
  • Funded addresses shows the balances as of the frozen block.

Starting over

To go back to the welcome screen without losing anything, delete the file wallet in .janus, as How to reset your wallet shows. Make the safety copy first.

Reporting a problem

Open an issue at github.com/unigrid-project/janus-java/issues and say:

  • which installer you used. Its file name holds the version, for example janus-2.0.0-windows-x64.msi,
  • your system and processor,
  • the message from Janus, word for word,
  • the end of hedgehog.log, if it has any content.

Do not attach a wallet file, a wallet dump or your recovery phrase, and never write the phrase in an issue.
