How to reset your wallet

Sometimes you want Unigrid to forget the wallet it opens on: to import a different wallet, to go through the setup again, or because you created a new wallet by mistake and want to get back to the one you had. Unigrid has no reset option in Settings yet, so for now you do this by hand. The steps, with screenshots:

⚠️ Warning: anything you delete is deleted permanently.

Treat every file you delete from the .janus folder as gone for good. Deleting from a terminal skips the Recycle Bin and the Trash altogether, and once they are emptied nothing can bring a file back, neither you nor anyone else. A wallet whose file is gone can only be restored from its 12-word recovery phrase, or from the original wallet.dat or wallet dump it was imported from. If you have neither, the coins in it are lost.

Before you delete anything, write down the recovery phrase of every wallet you want to keep, and make a copy of the whole .janus folder as each guide shows.

Where Unigrid keeps your wallets

Everything is in a folder named .janus in your home folder:

System Folder
Windows %USERPROFILE%\.janus, usually C:\Users\<you>\.janus
macOS ~/.janus, that is /Users/<you>/.janus
Linux ~/.janus, that is /home/<you>/.janus

What is in it:

Name What it is
wallet A small text file naming the wallet Unigrid opens on at start. It holds no keys.
wallets/evm-<address>.json A wallet you created or restored from a recovery phrase, one file per wallet.
backups/wallet-<date>.dat The copy Unigrid made of a wallet.dat when you imported it.
hedgehog, hedgehog.log The Hedgehog program Unigrid downloads, and its log. They hold no wallet data.

Going back to the start screen

Unigrid opens on the wallet that the file wallet names. Delete that one file, with Unigrid closed, and the next start opens on the start screen instead, where you can Create a new wallet or Import existing wallet. Your wallet files stay where they are, so nothing is lost by this, and for most cases it is all you need.

Removing a wallet for good

Do this only if you want a wallet off this computer altogether. Read the warning above again first.

  • A wallet created or restored from a recovery phrase is the file wallets/evm-<address>.json, where <address> is its first address as shown on the dashboard. Delete that file.
  • A wallet you imported from a wallet.dat is a file backups/wallet-<date>.dat. Delete that file. The original wallet.dat you imported is not touched, and stays wherever it was.

To remove every wallet and start completely from scratch, delete the whole .janus folder. Unigrid downloads Hedgehog again on its next start.

Getting back to a wallet

From the start screen choose Import existing wallet, and then:

  • A wallet with a recovery phrase: enter its 12 words. If the wallet’s file is still in the wallets folder, it is replaced, and the password you give now is the one that opens it from then on. This is also the way back if you created a new wallet by mistake: your earlier wallet is still there, under its own address.
  • A wallet.dat: choose the file. You can pick your original wallet.dat or one of the copies in .janus/backups.
  • A wallet dump: choose the dump file again.
